The former St Mary’s Church of England School was built in 1871and was the first national School in Walkley, paid for by public subscription and a government grant. Starting with 55 scholars, it could accommodate 300 children. In 1903 as a result of the Education Act, like all church school it was taken over by the Sheffield Education Committee and this was the start of free education in the area. In 1948 it became a primary school as older children had to attend a grammar school or other school offering secondary education.
In 1978, the School was moved to the former Burgoyne Board School. In later life it became a college of further education, the Loxley College Walkley Centre providing daytime and evening classes for adults including languages, local history, arts and bee-keeping. The current tenants are Sheffield SNU Spiritualist Church and Sheffield Yoga School, both of whom will welcome you into their spaces to show you how they have adapted the building to their needs, whilst retaining and restoring the key features. Whether you are a former pupil, staff member or just an interested member of the public, come and have a look around. Additional photographs of classroom groups will be available in St. Mary's Church next door church next door.
