Thomas Cotman (1847–1925) was a prolific local architect whose work helped define the character of Felixstowe as it grew into a fashionable seaside town in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Based in Ipswich and influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, Cotman brought a distinctive mix of practicality and decorative detail to his designs, many of which still shape the town’s streets today—from hotels and public buildings to private houses. He was also part of a wider artistic family, being the nephew of the renowned painter John Sell Cotman, and that artistic sensitivity often shows in his architecture. As we walk, we’ll see how his work contributed not just individual buildings, but a sense of identity that still defines Felixstowe.
