The Electric Palace
Electric Palace (Harwich) Ltd, Kings Quay Street, Harwich, Essex, CO12 3ER
As part of our next National Lottery Heritage Funded (NLHF) project, preserving & digitalising our archives, we would like to record snippets of people telling us their memories of the Electric Palace and Harwich. There will be some displays of photo's and letter's from our archives to view and help with the reminiscing. Of particular interest is our collection of original plans showing the vision from young architect Harold Hooper in the design of this historic cinema. When the cinema was rescued in the 1970's after a closure in 1956, volunteers led by the late Chris Strachan, had the foresight to rebuild it using these original plans as a guide, so making it one of the least unaltered early purpose built cinemas in the UK.
For the younger attendees, we will be making some film type storyboards around our new mascot 'Oscar the cinema cat!' We will recount the story of the real life cat called Oscar who attended many of the film screenings and sat on the customers laps! and then ask the children to draw or write what else he might do when he visits the Electric Palace. There will also be the opportunity for children to show off their design skills and draw their own plans for a cinema.
As always, our wonderful volunteers will be on hand to tell you more about the cinemas story- and even make you a cuppa!
