The Everyday Histories of Queens
Queens are often remembered for great public moments such as coronations, royal weddings, and political drama, but much of their lives was shaped by ordinary routines, personal relationships, and the practical realities of court life. This fascinating talk explores the everyday histories of queens from British history, revealing what life was really like behind the grandeur of monarchy.
Using sources such as diaries, household accounts, and personal records, the talk examines how queens spent their time, managed their households, interacted with servants and courtiers, and navigated the expectations placed upon them. By looking beyond major historical events, the session offers a more personal and human perspective on queenship and royal life.
The talk is presented by Elena Woodacre, Reader in Renaissance History at University of Winchester and an internationally recognised specialist in queenship and royal studies. Dr Woodacre is the author of several major works including Queens and Queenship and Joan of Navarre: Infanta, Duchess, Queen, Witch? She is also founder of the Royal Studies Network, organiser of the Kings & Queens conference series, and Editor in Chief of the Royal Studies Journal. Her expertise has featured in international media and the documentary series Queens that Changed the World.
