The evolution of Croston from a small rural village in the 1800s to a very different but still rural village in the 21st century. Population, employment, education, housing and transport have all made changes to the way of life.

Many factors have influenced the changes to Croston, a small self-sufficient rural village, but the biggest change was brought about by the new railway, in 1849. This was followed by two cotton mills, where employment changed from farming to a different kind of work for men and women. At this time rows of terraced houses were built to house the mill workers.

Education was improving, from boys-only to mixed schooling, to the Bishop Rawstorne Academy we have today. A school was built for the Methodist children in 1900.

Roads were improved, drains were laid. We had our own Gas Works, established 1888, followed later by electric lighting. The late 30's saw the first semidetached houses built. After WWII, new housing estates were built by the council, and some of the older homes were demolished.

We still have the railway - albeit a single line. We are still a rural village, with education and community at its heart. We fear the government's plans for housing on our agricultural fields and keep our fingers crossed for the future.
