Join Ukrainian historian Nataliia Niekrasa for a fascinating online journey into the history of the Ostroh Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy, founded in 1576 and recognised as the first institution of higher education in Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
Celebrating 450 years of the Ostroh Academy, this illustrated talk explores how a pioneering centre of learning became one of the most influential educational, cultural and spiritual institutions of the 16th century. Visitors will discover the Academy’s role in the development of scholarship, multilingual education, book printing and preservation of cultural identity during a period of major political and religious change across Europe.
The session will examine everyday academic life within the Academy, including the study of languages, philosophy, theology and sciences, as well as the importance of books, libraries and printing in shaping intellectual history. The event will also explore the publication of the famous Ostroh Bible — one of the most significant printed works in Eastern European history.
