The Flintstones
The Trundle Kennel Hill Car Park, Kennel Hill, Singleton, West Sussex, PO18 0SP
Fred and Wilma Flintstone would surely have felt right at home in the Western Weald. It is impossible to go for a walk around here without stumbling over flint, seeing flint houses and boundary walls, and being forgiven for thinking it is the crop growing in the fields. However, while it is as much a part of the South Downs’ landscape as chalk, it barely receives mention in our local story. The Trundle, a former Neolithic causeway enclosure within a later Iron Age fort, is the perfect place to start this walk about flint. On this gentle walk we'll be looking at the geology and history of flint as well as its use in local architecture.

This is a slow, small group walk with many opportunities to stop along the route, but there are two hills. People need to be physically able but not necessarily fit. We will walk at the pace of the slowest person. Facilities such as toilets, baby changing and refreshments can be found at a local cafe that is on our route. Assistant dogs and other well-trained/patient dogs on leads welcome.
Participants should disregard any emails or tickets from Eventbrite. They do not need to bring a printed ticket on the day—their name will be ticked off a list. Around five days before the walk, they will receive a detailed email from Rural Strides with everything they need to know.
