The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The exhibition is of photographs taken by Heritage Buildings Photographer a semi- professional photographer and retired Heritage Conservation Officer. Combining his knowledge of, and passion for, architectural history and Urban Design and his photography this brought an idea to raise awareness of the architecture of the town. Starting with concerns over a derelict historic building in the City, he went about a photographic record of historic buildings. The exhibition will be held in the city centre with some eighteen photographs, six buildings in each category, showing the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The good are the quality buildings in the city centre, either due to their architecture, their details or an example of a quality restoration and conversion scheme. The Bad are buildings that have sadly fallen into disrepair and either need to be restored or demolished for the benefit of wider regeneration aims. The Ugly are buildings that in some respects offer little to the quality of the City’s architecture. These buildings do not respect the scale, their details, materials or general style of Doncaster’s traditional architecture. In two of the buildings, it is modern changes that have brought down the quality of the host buildings. These are shop front fascia’s that do not respect the scale of historic shop fronts and are of a ‘gaudy’ nature.
This exhibition highlights the quality of the buildings, what could be achieved by attention to detail and what happens when it isn’t.
