Thetford Town Council welcomes you to see the newly restored Clock Tower, Clock face and Cupola at the historic Grade 2 listed Guildhall. Get a behind the scenes understanding of the works carried out and the history of restorations at the Guildhall.

The Guildhall in Thetford, Norfolk, was originally built in the early 15th century, around c. 1407. The building served various civic purposes, including as a meeting place for guilds, a courtroom, and later as a council chamber. Today it is home to Thetford Town Council and remains at the heart of the community.

As part of this year’s Heritage Open Days, Thetford Town Council is delighted to showcase the recently restored Clock Tower, Clock Face, and Cupola of the Grade II listed Guildhall in the heart of Thetford’s Market Place.

This major restoration project began in June 2023, following a detailed structural survey that identified the work needed to revitalise one of Thetford’s most iconic landmarks. Over the past year and a half, expert conservators have painstakingly repaired the intricate clock face and surrounding features, returning the tower to its former glory.

We invite you to visit the Guildhall and experience the beautifully restored Clock Tower and Cupola—now once again a proud centrepiece of Thetford’s skyline. During your visit, explore a behind-the-scenes exhibition of photographs taken throughout the restoration process, alongside historic plans, architectural drawings, and images of previous restoration efforts within the Guildhall.

Here's how to get there: Address: Thetford Guildhall, Market Place, Thetford, Norfolk, IP24 2DS, UK Next to it, you'll also find the Dad’s Army Museum (rear, off Cage Lane) and Guildhall Tea Room. On Foot - (within town centre) Head to Market Place in Thetford town centre. The Guildhall stands prominently on the southwest corner—the main façade faces into the square. You'll spot it easily by its neoclassical porch, clock tower, and cupola. By Car - Use a sat‑nav and set destination to IP24 2DS and utilise one of a number of free car parks. Public Guildhall Street Car Park is just off Guildhall Street, ~2 minutes walk.
