The History of Berwick's Bridges from the Archive Perspective

Berwick Record Office, Berwick Library, Walkergate, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, TD15 1DB

  • 16 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

The Berwick Record Office holds wonderful archives about Berwick's iconic bridges - Old Bridge; Royal Border and Royal Tweed. Come along and find out what interesting facts can be unearthed about them.

Based on research undertaken in the archives, this talk will look at why these bridges were built, who was involved in their construction and what are two of them "Royal". As this is the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Royal Border Bridge, the Old Bridge celebrated a 400th anniversary in 2024 and 2028 will be the centenary of the opening of the Royal Tweed Bridge, it's definitely a pertinent time to celebrate our bridges.
