Location details will be shown on the ticket, Bridport, Dorset, DT6
Step inside a remarkable piece of sporting architecture at the Hyde Tennis Club. Built in 1885 using beautiful local sandstone, this is no ordinary tennis court, but a historic Real Tennis court - a fascinating and complex indoor design that predates the modern game. It stands as one of only around 50 active courts worldwide, still proudly used for its original purpose.
Delve into the building's captivating past, from its Victorian beginnings as a premier sporting venue to its unexpected roles during periods of disuse (rumour has it that James Cagney may have entertained troops here during WWII). Learn how this remarkable building transformed from a skating rink and a venue for flower shows and WI meetings into a cow shed and milking parlour, before being lovingly restored to its former glory.
Our guided tours will take you inside and out, explaining the unique and intriguing features of a Real Tennis playing area look out for the 'tambour' and the 'galleries'. To truly appreciate this historic sport, you'll have the chance to see the game being played during a live demonstration.
