The Knights of Skirbeck
The Howdale,, Howdale Road, Downham Market, Norfolk, PE38 9AF
The Knights of Skirbeck, taking us back in time, will be present on our Heritage Open Day bringing colour and swashbuckling to Downham Market. They recreate medieval life in England of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, a time spanning the War of the Roses, a vivid time in our history.
This medieval re-enactment society specialises in illuminating the past through recreating the household of a knight's family, Bryan of Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, from a working kitchen to the armoury and other features of medieval life using living history displays, which are both educational and entertaining. Characters representing the knight's society of the time such as his fellow knights, town militia, men-at-arms, noble ladies, stewards, priests, cooks, camp followers and more bring that era to life again.
Exciting displays culminating in tournaments, combat demonstrations, very much a part of a knight's chivalrous life, both a sport and entertainment, which served to hone their martial skills. They show how the knights and men-at-arms defended England from raids and practised the art of combat, an essential tool of survival at that time.
The whole family will find something special to inform and entertain them and be able to see history in action, glimpse the life of a knight's family, how they dressed, what they ate, and what weapons they used to defend their families and lands. Also look out for reenactments by Downham Amateur Dramatic Society and Watlington Players.
