Step Into the Story: The Lantern Revealed
Lantern Theatre, 18 Kenwood Park Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S7 1NF
Uncover the rich history of The Lantern, a distinctive Victorian theatre located in leafy Nether Edge, Sheffield. Dating back to 1893, this charming 85-seat theatre boasts a unique blend of historic architecture and a vibrant community spirit.
Rescued in the 1950s by local actress Dilys Guite, it became home to the in-house company that still keeps it alive today. Since then, it has flourished as a vibrant space for amateur theatre, live music, and creative expression.
Guided by members of the Dilys Guite Players, the tour invites you to explore the auditorium, step onto the stage, and visit backstage areas not normally open to visitors. Along the way, you’ll notice charming details in the building’s design and history, including the original stable block now used as dressing rooms, and hear stories that bring its theatrical past vividly to life.
Whether you have a passion for theatre, local history, or just a curiosity for hidden gems, this tour offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes of one of Sheffield’s most atmospheric performance spaces.

Please note that there are steps leading up to the stage, and access to the dressing rooms is via a narrow external path. As a result, some areas may not be accessible to visitors with limited mobility. However, if you're unable to take part in the entire tour, we’ll have someone on hand for a friendly chat and to share the stories behind the scenes so that you won’t miss out on the magic.
