The Lost Pubs of Northchurch Village (Berkhamsted) from the 17th - 21st Century

Although local pubs such as the George and Dragon are thought of as a national institution, forever at the heart of English village life, they have evolved over the centuries through ale house and coaching inns to gastropubs. Walking around the centre of Northchurch we will visit the places where other Inns and pubs once served villagers and visitors alike. While some of the buildings that were once pubs remain for us to examine, others only survive in the old photographs and some are gone without a trace. However they all have much to tell us about the social, economic and political forces that shaped them. The walk begins and ends at the George and Dragon. There will be a question and answer session inside if people wish.

Accessibility details

The walk takes place along the High Street which is mostly a level narrow pavement. Part of the walk has no pavement at all and there is a moderate climb with a narrow pavement. Part of the walk has a pedestrian restriction. This may cause difficulties for people with mobility aids. The very busy High street will be crossed 4 times so extreme care should be taken. There will be a lot of standing, so stout shoes are recommended.
