A 5‑mile walk along the St James’ Way, uncovering the heritage and lived experiences of the monks and pilgrims - past and present - at the once magnificent Reading Abbey, jewel in the crown of King Henry I.

The walk will stop at the pilgrimage sites in central Reading, old and new, from Reading Museum, namely: the Camino Mural, Hospitium, St James Church, Abbey Gateway, Reading Abbey Ruins and the Camino Milestone ("Mouteira" in Galician), before setting off along the Camino route for 4 miles to The Cunning Man pub, Burghfield Bridge for an optional pub lunch. The return to Reading can be made by bus following the walk (the bus stop is outside this gorgeous thatched pub).
At each stop the significance of the sites to monks and pilgrims will be explained and explored, in line with this year's theme - everyday histories. The walk has two guides - John Painter, Secretary of the Friends of Reading Abbey and David Sinclair, Development Lead - St James' Way Camino Ingles, Confraternity of St James' UK.
Walkers may also want purchase a Pilgrim Passport ("credencial") at the start, and collect stamps along the walk if they intend to continue to Southampton or Santiago de Compostela at a later date.
