The Night Soil Men of Hull

“The Night Soil Men” is an illustrated presentation about the appalling living conditions and hopeless hygiene in the slums of Victorian Hull, the consequent outbreaks of disease and the remedies attempted by the doctors which often exacerbated the problems.

Told from the viewpoint of Obadiah Gibson, a professional Night Soil Man describing his work routine to a reporter, other characters are introduced (all played by Eddie Wildman and Neil Armstrong) and the use of child labour in terrible working conditions is illustrated. This is not just a retelling of historical events, but an immersive experience transporting the watching audience back to the flickering gaslit cobbled streets of the dockside old town. It is a blend of personal storiesand social commentary and a tribute to those who through their important work, social stigma and tragedy tried to keep disease away from their unappreciative customers, Though this is a dark tale, there is much to laugh at as well as scenes which will bring a tear to the eye.
