The Old Vicarage tours

As part of Heritage Open Days, step inside one of Bridgwater’s most historic buildings. The Old Vicarage Hotel is the town’s oldest commercial building and the second oldest surviving structure after St Mary’s Church. Comprising of six cottages, the earliest section dates back to 1296, offering a fascinating glimpse into over 700 years of local history.

Steeped in stories and local legend, the hotel is also reputed to be haunted. Paranormal investigators have visited the site and reported unexplained activity, with tales suggesting that rebel soldiers still linger within its ancient walls.

Join one of two guided tours and discover remarkable historic features, including the Oak Room, which retains its original timber panelling and mantelpiece dating from around 1734. You'll also see the intriguing ‘Bottle Hole’, a bottle-shaped opening once used by stagecoach drivers to collect a bottle of drink and continue on their journey.

The Old Vicarage is situated next to St Mary's Church. The Old Vicarage does have a dedicated car park. However, spaces are limited and offered to guests on a first come basis although there is free street parking nearby. There are also many municipal car parks a short distance away
