The Ouseburn Valley Prize Trail: An Everyday History Mystery
51 Lime Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE1 2PQ
Can you solve the mysteries of everyday life in the Ouseburn Valley?
How many cups could a Victorian pottery worker make in an hour? What did a 14-year-old girl do at the Maynards toffee factory? What on earth was a "saggar"? And what did the Ouseburn smell like 200 years ago?
For this year's Heritage Open Days, become a history detective and explore the Valley on our Ouseburn Prize Trail!
Pick up your trail sheet from the Ouseburn Trust's Hub at 51 Lime Street, and set off around the Ouseburn to discover the people, jobs, businesses and everyday experiences hidden in the streets around you. Follow clues, solve puzzles and uncover stories from the Valley's industrial past – from pottery workers and confectionery makers to railway workers, engineers and the families who lived alongside the factories. You'll need to keep your eyes open, put your detective skills to work and perhaps learn a few strange new words along the way!
Complete the trail and return to 51 Lime Street to collect a small Ouseburn history prize.
The trail should take around 1 hour to complete, and is suitable for curious history detectives of all ages with accessible routes throughout. Children may need a little help from an adult. This is a great activity to complete in between exploring some of the many other events in the Ouseburn Valley!
