The People's Hall Open Day
The Peoples Hall, 18 Heathcoat Street, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, NG1 3AA
Step back in time at The People's Hall, a Grade II* listed building and one of Nottingham's most important historic townhouses. Originally built in 1750 for the Morley family, wealthy potters and civic leaders, the building retains exceptional Georgian interiors, including a magnificent staircase with intricate plasterwork and panelling.
Explore the rich history of this remarkable building, from its origins as a grand family home to its transformation into a vital community hub. Discover its time as the home of the Nottingham School of Design, a pioneering institution that helped the city's manufacturing economy thrive. Learn about George Gill, a local philanthropist who purchased the property in 1854, renaming it "The People's Hall" and establishing a library, reading rooms, and educational classes for the working people of Nottingham.
This is a unique opportunity to experience a key piece of Nottingham's architectural and social history, a building that reflects the city's development from a centre of trade and industry to a place of social and cultural enlightenment. Our volunteers will be leading exclusive tours to parts of the house usually closed to the public, offering a glimpse into the incredible restoration work that is needed to bring this building back to life.
