  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

This walk covers the four war time Auxiliary hospitals in Thorpe used in 1914-1918 with a special mention of Coonoor at 151 Yarmouth Road.

During World War One a number of properties on the Yarmouth Road in Thorpe St Andrew were converted into auxiliary war hospitals to accommodate the large numbers of wounded servicemen returning from France and Belgium. Several were provided by their owners as their contribution to the war effort. This tour tells the story of the nurses and the soldiers they cared for and recalls some of the events that took place at the hospitals. It focusses on one in particular - Coonoor - which had been offered as a hospital by its owner Mrs Dods.
