The Ripon School of Woodcarving at Holy Trinity, Wensley
An exceptional survival from Tudor England, the woodwork at Holy Trinity, Wensley, is some of the most spectacular work in ‘The Ripon School’ style. Inspiring the forgeries of Gothic architect-antiquary George Shaw of Uppermill, West Yorkshire, this talk by Dr Peter N. Lindfield of Cardiff University unpacks the priceless Tudor-Gothic woodwork at Holy Trinity.
This talk is part of a wider pilot project funded by The British Academy exploring and charting the architecture and forgeries of this largely forgotten, but nefariously enthusiastic architect. Dr Lindfield’s recent book transcribing Shaw’s correspondence and diaries, The Intimacies of George Shaw (1810–76), was recently published by The Chatham’s Society and will be available on the day.
