The Rise and Fall of Hyde Abbey 1110-1538
St Bartholomew's Church, King Alfred Place, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 7DF
Hyde Abbey was a significant and impressive Norman building standing majestically in the suburbs of Hyde. Today its ground-plan is re-created with Hyde Abbey Garden together with three ledger stones that mark the grave of King Alfred and his immediate family.
For just over four hundred the abbey was home to St Benedict monks. During those centuries the abbey suffered damage from external, historic conflicts until its final blow and deconstruction during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and, with it, the disappearance of King Alfred.
The walk will include remembering the 1780s building ‘House of Correction’, centred in King Alfred Place. Also, identifying stones from the abbey which are now dispersed around the walls around Hyde.
