The social history of North Camp
Aldershot Military Museum, Evelyn Woods Road, Aldershot, Hampshire, GU11 2LG
The founding of the Army garrison on Aldershot Heath had a profound impact for the neighbouring village of Farnborough to the north of the camp. Shops, pubs, and entertainment venues sprang up as close as possible to the camp where thousands of soldiers meant good business for entrepreneurs of all types. From these beginnings grew the thriving civilian community of North Camp. This talk looks at the social history of North Camp, including the connection with Windsor Forest; the impact of the Army on Farnborough village; the establishment of a new civic community; commercial enterprises; accommodation for the workers; and North Camp in modern times.
Jo Gosney is a renowned local historian and author of numerous books, including “Farnborough Past” and “Farnborough Through Time”.
