THE SPLENDID AND SURPRISING STONES OF WELLS

St. Cuthbert Street, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2AW

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

The City of Wells is a medieval gem where the splendid Cathedral and St Cuthbert's Church in particular have beautiful and fascinating stone carvings. Visitors can enjoy these to the full through talks, walks and activities.

On Saturday 13th September at Wells Cathedral there will be tours of the stone carvings revealing both the skill and the humour of the craftsmen. Visitors will be able to get up close and personal with some carvings in the displays at the museum; and at St Cuthbert's Church there will be an opportunity to hear the fascinating story of the lost and found 15th century painted statues; and to see some of these unique survivors.
There will also be a stonemason demonstrating the almost unchanged skills of carving.
On the Sunday, at St Cuthbert's Church, visitors can enjoy a short, light-hearted romp around the history of the church. They will meet some of the church's 'inhabitants' who are still there in carvings and other memorials. It will be informative, entertaining ....and ridiculous! And will be followed by a delicious tea with home-made treats.
