Join Simon Roffey, University of Winchester, to learn how a door from a Medieval Leper Hospital is to be found on St Peter’s Church, Jewry Street, and see some of the finds discovered during the excavations at the hospital on Morn Hill.

Join us for an illustrated talk to discover the surprising connection between Medieval Leper Hospital of St Mary Magdalen on Morn Hill and St Peter’s Catholic Church, Jewry Street. Simon Roffey of the University of Winchester Archaeology Department will explain how the door of the hospital chapel, and the only remaining part of the Leper Hospital, came to be used, first as the entrance to one of the earliest Post-Reformation Catholic chapels in England, at nearby Milner Hall, and finally as the north door of St Peter’s Church. There will also be an opportunity to see not only the door, but some of the amazing finds discovered during the excavations at the hospital, including a medieval pilgrim’s badge, medieval writing equipment, and a reconstructed head. Overall, we will consider how the 12th century doorway is a witness to Catholic continuity, embedding the physical remnants of the past within a renewed liturgical and institutional framework.
