The Story of St Mark’s, Ampfield
St. Mark Church, A3090, Ampfield, Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 9BU
Come and learn about St Mark’s Church, which was built in 1838-41 under the direction of Revd
John Keble when Ampfield was part of his neighbouring parish of Hursley. Find out more about the
decisions he made as he followed the principles of the newly-established Oxford Movement -
making sure the focal points were on the altar raised up three steps at the east end and on the
Communion service rather than, as had become the norm, on the pulpit and preaching of long
sermons. Find out why Bishop Sumner thought of Ampfield and Hursley as “a plague spot in his
diocese”. Learn more about the design and fittings of the church, the stories behind the stained
glass windows. You will also learn something of the early vicars and their influences on the
building in the following years. Enjoy the churchyard with its specimen trees and German-style
fountain.
