The 17th-century Old Library of St John’s College exhibits a millennium’s worth of treasures, from manuscripts and rare printed books to pioneering photography and personal papers.

Public exhibitions in the Old Library of St John’s College have, for some years now, been curated according to themes (including skeletons, jokes, the classical elements, private presses, animals, vegetables, minerals, and many more). For Open Cambridge this year we’re putting the themes on pause in the name of offering a particularly diverse selection of Library treasures. These will include a 10th-century Irish book of psalms (our oldest complete manuscript); a prayer book and religious calendar formerly owned by Lady Margaret Beaufort (the College’s Foundress and mother of Henry VII); Thomas Cromwell’s copy of the Great Bible (recently exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery and the National Library of Wales); and a wide spread of maps, rare books, artefacts, photographs and personal papers spanning a millennium of writing and learning. All of this will be exhibited in the beautiful surroundings of a 17th-century library.
