The Undercroft with live music

38 Upper Bugle Street, Western Esplanade, Southampton, Hampshire, SO14 2BJ

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

An inclusive celebration of music of all genres amidst the vibrant cultural heritage of Southampton. Culminating in an annual multi-venue music festival on 13/14th September. We exist for the musicians and the people of Southampton.

The Undercroft is particularly elaborate with its vaulted ceiling, carvings of human heads and large
fireplace. Traces of paint have been found in some places so the whole interior was probably once
richly painted. As the wine vaults acted as showrooms as well as stores, this might have been
designed to impress prospective buyers. The wine was mostly sold wholesale to the butlers of the
aristocracy who were sent to Southampton by their masters to buy a cask or two at a time.

Through utilising the fascinating history and heritage event in combination with our local celebration of live music; Music in The City should culminate in a totally unique experience for the people of Southampton and the wider community. The Undercroft is one of 7 different vaults open especially for the event, all with their own unique character and atmosphere, elevated through the live music being performed. The live music is diverse with all types of genres and artists performing including folk, rock, sea shanties, afrobeats, choirs and more.
