Sheffield’s historic Castlegate is packed with stories of people who have lived and worked here - some famous like Mary Stewart, history’s most well-known asylum seeker, some infamous like Victorian master criminal Charlie Peace.

A guided history walk for Heritage Open Days around Sheffield’s historic founding site – Castlegate - now undergoing regeneration We will illustrate its rich social, political and industrial history seen through the lives of fifteen of its inhabitants rich and poor, native and newcomer, human and animal. Some are world famous like Mary Stewart, history’s most well-known asylum seeker, others infamous like Victorian master criminal Charlie Peace and some sadly almost forgotten like pioneering food industry giantess Ella Hudson Gaskin - learn about them all and many more.
