Local sports historian, Nigel Fenner shares the local history of women and sport, including why the Victorians had such a damming impact, until relatively recently.

7 of the first 16 Colleges in Cambridge, up to the end of the 16th century, were founded by women, however this ‘equality’ did not transfer into sport, with a few exceptions, across the centuries. For example in the 18th century, a visiting Frenchman observed “in more than one county of England young damsels are to be seen contending for a prize at a course…. They run with surprising swiftness”.
