Thornton Park Kingsthorpe
Mill Lane, Kingsthorpe, Northampton, Northamptonshire, NN2 6RH
Thornton Park is a beautiful open green space much loved by the people of Kingsthorpe but it was not always open to the public as it was a private home and country estate from 1773 when the historic house we see today was built. It wasn’t until 1939, two years after the Northampton Corporation purchased the estate and hall that it was opened officially as Kingsthorpe Park. The historic house is now privately owned and divided into flats so we cannot access the building during our heritage walks. However the talks will give insight into the families who lived there in the past, the history of the house but more importantly the gardens, particularly the ornamental ones as these are home to many interesting species of trees.
The Friends of Thornton Park which is organising the Picnic in the Park and these guided heritage walks on Saturday 12 September 2026 to coincide with Heritage Open Days was formed by a group of people from the community to restore not only the neglected gardens but also to care for the park in partnership with West Northamptonshire Council to make it a beautiful and welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy.
