Tour of the Gawthorpe Textiles Collections Stores

Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, Suite 226 Unit 2 Northlight House, Pendle Road, Brierfield, Lancashire, BB9 5FL

  • 17 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Join us at Northlight, a converted 19th century textile mill for a behind the scenes look at the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection and how we store and care for over 35,000 historic textiles and a chance to see some of them as we explore the store.

To celebrate Heritage Open Days we are running three free behind the scenes tours of our collection stores throughout the day. These will offer you the chance to look behind the scenes at how we store and care for our amazing collection of over 35,000 heritage textiles, which are now stored in custom built storage in a converted 19th century textile mill. You'll also get the opportunity to see some items from the collection as we explore the stores.

The tour will be led by the collection's Curator, Rachel Midgley and each tour will last around 30 minutes with opportunities to ask questions afterwards.

Although these events are free of charge, booking is essential so that we can keep track of numbers as space in the stores is limited. There will be three tours run throughout the day starting at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

Accessibility details

The tour will require visitors to move around the stores to view things. There will be very limited seating available for short breaks but it will not be advisable to remain on this seating for the duration of the tour as you will miss out on seeing items that will be shown in situ in their storage locations. The building and stores have step free access and wide aisles, so mobility aids and wheelchairs of most kinds can be used. If you would like to discuss accessibility with us please give us a call on 01282 773963 before booking and we can describe the facilities and space in more detail.
