Tours of Caversham Baptist Church
South Street, Caversham, Reading, Berkshire, RG4 8HY
Alfred Waterhouse is particularly known for his design of the Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall. Later in life, he settled in Reading where he designed Reading Town Hall, Reading School and several buildings around Reading University.
The first Baptist Free Church in Caversham was designed by Waterhouse and built in 1865-6 across the road in what is now the West Memorial Hall and converted to apartments. Requiring more space, the church bought the triangular plot at the junction of three roads. Waterhouse was commissioned to design the building which, unusually, is set on a north/south axis. Built in the red brick in the Gothic style, the church is Grade II listed.
The Church team has prepared a display and will lead tours.
