St. Marys Church, Castle Street, Thornbury, Bristol, Gloucestershire, BS35 1HQ
St Mary’s Church, Thornbury, stands at the heart of the community, offering a welcoming space for worship, reflection, and connection. The church combines rich heritage with a welcoming congregation dedicated to serving the people of Thornbury and the surrounding area.
On Saturday 12th September 2026, St Mary’s will open its doors for Heritage Open Day, inviting visitors to explore the church and learn more about its rich history. A highlight of the day will be guided Tower Tours, giving visitors the rare opportunity to climb the church tower and enjoy spectacular views while discovering more about the building and its bells. The tour follows a specific route to the top of the tower – all 133 steps – and includes a short talk about the ringing room.
Please note that the tower climb is not for the faint of heart and is not suitable for children under 8 years of age. Wheelchair access is available within the church but not to the tower. Tower tours are weather permitting and booking is essential.
The day also coincides with Ride and Stride in support of the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust, with participants welcome from 10am. Visitors can also enjoy a Mothers’ Union stall offering produce and crafts, along with refreshments and homemade cake available throughout the afternoon. Whether visiting for the history, the views from the tower, or simply to enjoy the warm community atmosphere, everyone is warmly invited to be part of this special day at St Mary’s Church.
