The Turner Home is an extraordinary building designed by Alfred Waterhouse as a rest home in the 1880s, and still providing residential care today. Join us for talks on the architecture and history of the Home with Janice Tullock and Matthew Ashton.

In celebration of Heritage Open Days 2026, join us at the Turner Home for two talks celebrating this unique and fascinating Liverpool organisation.

Janice Tullock, local historian and archivist, will share findings from her recent research into the origins of the Turner Home. Established by philanthropist Anne Turner as a memorial to her husband and son, the Turner Home opened in 1884 to provide care for men with chronic health conditions. Its mission today remains the same: to support men with mental health challenges, memory loss and acquired brain injuries with specialist, person-centred residential care. The talk will explore the origins of the Turner family fortune, Anne Turner's impact on the city of Liverpool, and the changes the Turner Home has seen over more than a century.

The Turner Home was designed by renowned Liverpool architect Alfred Waterhouse, whose other works include the Natural History Museum in London, Manchester Town Hall, and Liverpool's own Victoria Gallery and Museum and the Radisson hotel building next to Lime Street station. Matthew Ashton of MGMA Architects will explore Waterhouse's design for the Turner Home and what makes it such a special, and yet little known Liverpool landmark.

The setting for these talks will be the Turner Home's stunning Gothic chapel, a rare chance to see inside this architectural gem.

This free talk is funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the 140 Years of Care project.
