Uncomfortable Oxford: Deconstructing Rhodes House

Deconstructing Rhodes House is a tour organised by Uncomfortable Oxford — a social enterprise led by researchers and historians who explore the city’s uncomfortable histories and their ongoing impact today. The aim of the tour is not just to deconstruct Rhodes House as a memorial to Cecil Rhodes, but also to highlight stories of resistance, change, and reinvention and to ask how an institution can evolve beyond its colonial origins.
This tour is designed to be a conversation, not a lecture: we ask participants to share their thoughts and perspectives and request to be respectful of differing opinions.
The tour will start and end at Rhodes House on South Parks Road (OX1 3RG). The tour lasts about 75mins and will be mostly inside the Rhodes House building and garden. Each tour can accommodate up to 15 attendees.

This tour was developed with the support of the Atlantic Institute, based at Rhodes House and in collaboration with Rhodes Scholars, who, in recent years, researched and developed their own tour for new Scholars arriving into Rhodes House. While distinct, the tour you will experience today has been informed and enriched by their work.
