University of Warwick Maths Houses
Maths Houses, Gibbet Hill campus, Gibbet Hill Road, University of Warwick, Coventry, West Midlands, CV4 7AL
As a special event to mark the University of Warwick’s 60th Anniversary, the Grade II listed Maths Houses are being opened for Heritage Open Days for the first time. This is an opportunity to explore these innovative houses designed by Bill Howell in 1969 for visiting mathematicians for the first time. Along with access to one of the houses, there will be a display of design documentation from the University of Warwick’s Modern Records Centre and some maths engagement craft activities which will be fun for all ages (led by Dr Helena Verrill of Warwick’s Maths Department). Come along and check out the Maths Houses’ ‘wiggly walls’ lined with a chalk board for the mathematicians to use during their stay. The Maths Houses were recognised for their innovative design with a RIBA Architecture Award in 1970 and are a fascinating marker of the university’s commitment to innovation and impact, pioneering research and challenging teaching.
