Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe: The Place, Its People and a Theatre - something for everyone in the family

In an exhibition housed in Upperthorpe Library, both grownups and children will find lots to enjoy. The exhibition tells the story of the 'Sheffield Educational Settlement and the Little Theatre' and the children's part offers theatre themed family activities.
Over 100 years ago the Sheffield Educational Settlement was established in Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe, to achieve education for local workers and the community. Local people were encouraged to learn together, sharing hopes, aspirations and experiences. They read books and heard lectures but also learnt from producing drama together, in their very own Little Theatre.
The aim was to lay foundations, and equip working people for being capable citizens, parents + community leaders.
How did the experience help that community shape its own future and can we learn from it today?
This exhibition uses records of personal testimony to describe the Upperthorpe community as it was then and looks at what it became. Can this help today’s generation shape their future?
