Vanished Buildings and Bridges Old and New, Halesworth

This will be a relaxed walk along the man-made navigation (the New Reach) which linked Halesworth to Southwold and the sea for transporting goods by wherry (big ship like a sailing barge). We will also stand under one of Britain’s earliest concrete bridges (it’s OK it’s quite safe) and explore the history of this stretch of the Blyth valley. The leader, Nicky Rowbottom, is a long-time volunteer with the Millennium Green and worked for 30 years in nature conservation in Suffolk and beyond. She is a historian by training and inclination, fascinated by the stories visible in the landscape if you know how and where to look.

Accessibility details
Peaceful dogs are welcome if they’re happy to stop and listen periodically. Toilets in Town Park near the start of walk. Some of the walk is on hard paths, but we will venture off onto unsurfaced, uneven tracks. Car parks at Thoroughfare and Angel North, Halesworth. The town is stuffed with cafes and pubs.
