Follow in the footsteps of James Mackay Wilson, editor of the Berwick Advertiser and author of Tales of the Borders. Find out more about his life and also his stories, published in the 1830s but still being reworked today.

Join this walking tour led by Andrew Ayre and find out more about places in Tweedmouth and Berwick connected with James Mackay Wilson who died in 1835. Wilson's Tales of the Borders were originally published in the local newspaper of which he was the Editor . There are over 400+ tales and they were regularly republished in the 19th century. The Tales include Grizel Cochrane and the Adventures of Launcelot Errington and his nephew, Mark.

The Wilson’s Tales Project has been created by a group of volunteers based in Berwick upon Tweed, to stimulate a revival of interest in the Tales. It aims to raise awareness of the original Tales and provide a platform for contemporary artists of all types to respond to and re-tell them in modern ways to modern audiences. This has included live performances by story tellers, musicians singing the original ballads on which many were based, and stage and radio play adaptations of the Tales in historic venues.

In addition, the Project has published its own ‘Revival Editions’ of Tales, each one retold in modern language and with an accompanying item setting out the historical accuracy, or otherwise, of the original.
