Northants’s best kept secret is open for Open Heritage Days!
Once a closely guarded military secret The Royal Ordnance Depot Weedon Bec is now open daily to the public, enjoying its many shops and businesses and its rich architecture and military history.
Built at the height of the Napoleonic War this unique 20 acre site supplied the British Army for 150 years with weapons, uniforms and supplies in every conflict around the globe.
Hundreds of workers dug a canal arm from the Grand Junction Canal and erected eight Georgian storehouses alongside to receive guns and gunpowder from barges. Through the Victorian, Edwardian and to the mid-20th century, scores of buildings went up with thousands of soldiers and civilians including many women employed.
2025 is the 60th anniversary of the Army leaving the Depot. This year for Heritage Open Days, on Sunday Sept 21 as well as the regular exhibitions in the Visitor Centre in Building 90 we hope to welcome re-enactors, military vehicles and displays and lots of visitors. There is a rare opportunity for free accompanied inspections of the restored Bastion from which soldiers guarded the Depot and which is not normally open to the public. Guided tours of the whole site can also be booked on the day.
The Depot, Harmans Way, Weedon Bec, Northants NN7 4PS is open all day, the event at Building 90 is open from midday till 5pm. Entry and parking is free. Visit www.weedonvc.uk
