A new pop up display tells the stories of three residents from Wells. William Catcott, known as the baker-bard of Wells, was a baker to the people of Tor Street and the surrounding area. In his spare time, he chronicled the everyday experience of life in 19th century Wells through poetry, a selection of which are featured in this display. Samuel Damerel was the caretaker of Wells Recreation Ground from its foundation in 1888. After the Recreation Ground was first established by Bishop Hervey, Samuel Damerel lived and worked in the grounds to provide an enjoyable and orderly environment. Thomasine White, who lived on the High Street, battled to preserve the May day traditions against increasingly rigid religious restrictions in the early 17th century. In her attempt to preserve the traditions, Thomasine White found herself on a collision course with the local constable John Hole, resulting in wider consequences for the whole city.
