Steam-powered land drainage on the Somerset Levels began at Westonzoyland in 1830, with the first of eight pumping stations built on the banks of the River Parrett. See the award-winning 1861 Easton Amos land drainage machine in action, and other engines, winches, turbines and pumps using steam raised by our 1938 Marshall Portable Boiler. We have one of England’s largest collections of working steam engines and pumps. The Museum also features a 2-foot narrow-gauge railway for demonstrations and passenger rides, along with a rolling stock shed to explore. Other highlights include a blacksmith’s forge, Lister deep well pumps, a small waterwheel and a Lancashire boiler. The original engine house, forge and chimney are Grade II* listed and open to visitors. Free parking, Tea Room serving light refreshments, hot and cold drinks, wide selection of cakes, book and souvenir sales.

Accessibility details
Level access to most areas including entrance, tea room, exhibition hall and around site generally but some steps in original pump house, which do not restrict viewing of the land drainage machine.
Additional information
Open all year round on Sunday afternoons, with free admission, when not in steam. Donations always welcome.
