What have the Victorians done for us?

There has been a small settlement on the hilltop in Ipsley since the time of the Domesday Book in 1086. It noted, among other things, that there was a local priest, farmers and a mill. The early wooden Saxon church was replaced in 1348 by the current stone built church, that was dedicated to St Peter.

Over the years, many changes were made to the church. Until in the early Victorian era it was noted that it had been 'pulled to pieces' and was in need of major repairs. This exhibition shows the before and after plans of the church and it explains why the changes were made. Information about the services in the church, the births, marriages and deaths shed some light on the local community.

A large board in the church provides details about a church charity founded by members of the local gentry, from the Landor and Slipper families. The exhibition explains where the charity monies came from and how they were distributed to the poorer people of the parish.

In addition, details about other buildings in Ipsley show how this very agricultural hamlet changed in the 1800s with the growth of local needle mills and the manufacturing in nearby Redditch and Studley.

During the open day, the church bellringers will be ringing. There will also be a plant sale and refreshments will be served all day. This is a free event; donations welcome.

Accessibility details

There is good wheelchair access to the church and the Huband Room attached to the main building. There is a step in the nave of the church and access to the bell tower is restricted.
