Where the Railway Journey Began: The Station Agent's House
48 Liverpool Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M3 4EQ
Join us to explore The Station Agent’s House, Saturday 12 - Sunday 13 September 2026 as part of Heritage Open Days.
In 1828, the building and the surrounding site was identified by the Liverpool & Manchester Railway (under the initial supervision of Engineer George Stephenson) as being well placed for what would be Liverpool Road Station. The house became the dwelling of the first Station Agent, Joseph Green and his family. The Station Agent’s House was the hub around which Liverpool Road Station was developed. Here, so much that would characterise train travel was first seen: waiting rooms, signals, tickets, ticket offices, and the station agent’s (later master's) house.
Come and explore this grand historic home, now wonderfully restored for future generations and families to enjoy as a hub for exploration of Manchester and the surrounding area.
We will be sharing information about the history of the building, and a Children’s Explorer activity booklet will be available. All are welcome.
