A working windmill, a fascinating museum of rural crafts and farming methods, and lovely gardens to relax in.

One of Sandwich's best kept secrets, over the past few years the White Mill has undergone extensive restoration work. At the hands of an amazing team of skilled volunteers the sweeps (sails) have been completely rebuilt according to tradition, as has the grinding machinery of the Mill. Work continues on the grinding stones themselves, and when this is complete the White Mill will be grinding flour, as it was until the middle of the 20th century, when it fell into disrepair. All of this can be viewed on the various levels of the Mill.
For the engineering minded, after the sails collapsed in 1926, the Mill itself was powered by an engine, which was housed in a small room just outside the Mill itself. This enabled the Mill to operate, while removing the need for complex and costly maintenance to the sweeps. A replacement engine was acquired this year, & following restoration by our volunteer mechanics, this is now being reinstated, so that both forms of power will soon be in operation.
In addition to the Mill itself, visitors can enjoy the original Miller's Cottage, the museum displays of historic farming & agricultural machinery, & a range of historic workshops, all laid out to give a vivid idea of rural life in days gone by.
All this adds up to a great family experience.
