Whitgift - tour and exhibition at St Mary Magdalene church

St. Mary Magdalene church, Whitgift, lies in an area next to the River Ouse known as the Marshlands famous for being part of the extensive drainage programme carried out by Charles I and Cornelius Vermuyden in the seventeenth century. This church replaced one that was built in 1130 which was destroyed by the Rector of nearby Adlingfleet. It was built in the 1300s with support from Selby Abbey and the Earl of Lincoln. Some of the earliest recordings of Whitgift refer to a Market or Fayre in 1231, probably because there was a river crossing there, enabling commerce to take place. It was held at the Feast of the Blessed Mary Magdalene.
The church is particularly well-known for its clock which became famous during World War II, helping to guide German pilots who were following the River Ouse to bomb the Port of Goole. Visitors are encouraged to come and visit and spot why.
A series of banners have been created this year depicting the history of the church which will be on display.
