Winchelsea Wesley Methodist Chapel

The Wesleyan Society was formed in Winchelsea at least by 1774 and this 'Preaching House' was built in 1785. John Wesley himself preached from the pulpit which is seen today in the Grade 2 listed Chapel in 1789. It is of particular historic importance because it is the only surviving Methodist chapel in Sussex in which John Wesley the founder of the Methodist Movement preached.

John Wesley visited Winchelsea on several occasions and was supportive of the local community. As well as preaching in the 'Preaching House' he also preached his final outdoor sermon under the 'Wesley' Tree that is just around the corner from the chapel, as there wasn't sufficient room for all those who wanted to hear him. He was 87. The original tree fell in 1927 and the present tree is taken from a sapling and planted in 1931.

The Chapel is run by a Management Committee who plan events every few weeks. These vary from Christian Festival celebrations, concerts and talks of a historical nature, to Open Days to link in with the open gardens days in the town.

Within the Chapel there is memorabilia from the days of Wesley, and of Methodism, as well as copies of the history of the Chapel. The Chapel is supported by 'Friends' and application forms may be found in the Chapel or on the website.

This year (2026) there will be additional displays of historic material including a number of 19th Century Circuit preaching plans for the Rye Circuit which will be of interest to many.

Directions:

The Chapel is to be found on the main road (A259) which skirts the town and parking is dead easy, right opposite on the hard standing with space for 5 or 6 vehicles, or in an adjacent street in this wonderfully, picturesque place. If you haven't experienced the peace and tranquility of the town before, it's time to put that right. You will be very welcome.

Accessibility details

Access for disabled people is a little difficult as there is only one entrance and this has two steps. Sadly this cannot be improved due to the size and design of the Preaching House
