Wine & Words by Watson is a modern venture situated in a building on Lord Street that was once the entrance to the Manchester & County Bank, connecting our present-day venue with Southport’s commercial and financial heritage.

Today, the space has been given a new lease of life as an independent bookshop, coffee shop and wine bar. Since opening in August 2025, Wine & Words by Watson has become a place for people to meet, relax, discover new books and enjoy good coffee, wine and conversation.

For Heritage Open Days, we are celebrating the history of our building and its place within the story of Lord Street. Visitors can discover more about its former use as the entrance to the Manchester & County Bank, it's stunning arched ceiling as well as the magnificent stone coat of arms, giving just a glimpse of what must have an incredible space back at the height of it's grandeur. Explore how this historic space has evolved from a place of business and commerce into a welcoming community venue.

We hope you enjoy discovering a little more about the history behind our doors and Lord Street – and perhaps staying for a coffee, a glass of wine or a browse through our books while you are here!
