Winslow History Walk: Lawyers, Doctors, Teachers
28 Hight Street, Winslow, Buckinghamshire, MK18 3HF
28 High Street was built by the lawyer T.P. Willis with money he embezzled from his clients. It later became the offices of Winslow Rural District Council, and now belongs to Winslow Town Council. From there we’ll visit the Willis family graves in the churchyard, and walk past the house of Dr Cowley (a pioneer of opium production) and the Brook Hall School for Young Ladies. You’ll see the former Bank (built in 1891), the house renovated by an anthropologist, the former Girls’ School (1864) and the childhood home of a famous playwright. The walk will also include the exterior of Winslow Hall, which has been used as a school and an asylum at different times. You can see buildings where a Georgian front disguises a much older back, usually because a lawyer or doctor wanted his house to look more fashionable.
